What if my child does not speak German? Children with no German language experience are welcome at Kinderstube! As children in Kinderstube are a mixture of both native English and German speakers (and other languages too!) they naturally help each other learn and acquire their new language. The preschool program is conducted entirely in German, with teachers that speak at an age appropriate level.
How many children attend Kinderstube in one class? St Paul location: Kinderstube is licensed for 20 children in our mixed-ages classroom. The average teacher to student ratio is 1 to 7.
Minneapolis location: Kinderstube is licensed for 34 children in our mixed-ages classrooms. We have one classroom for 14 students and one classroom for 20 students. The average teacher to student ratio is 1 to 7.
At what age can my child begin Kinderstube? Children must be 3 years old to start attending Kinderstube.
How much German is used during daily activities? We strive for 100% German immersion. English is used only as necessary to clarify confusion or provide comfort. Students who are new to our program and do not speak German will be guided by a gradual language immersion.
With immersion in German, will my child’s English suffer? No. Research shows that exposing children at a young age to a second language actually improves their verbal ability in their native language as well.
Will my child be well-prepared for Kindergarten? Yes. Our curriculum incorporates many special learning times for children entering Kindergarten the following year. During these daily activities children learn and practice progressively more challenging cognitive activities. Feedback given by Kindergarten teachers also stresses the importance of learning and practicing of social skills. These skills are the foundation for successful future learning and the cornerstones of our Kinderstube philosophy. Activities in our program are geared to the expansion of age-appropriate attention spans, co-existence with peers, self-help skills as well as self-regulation skills through daily play and interaction.
Is parent involvement required? Yes. Kinderstube is a non-profit preschool, committed to offering a high quality, yet affordable bilingual program. We believe that by enrolling your child at Kinderstube, you become part of the community that shares the goal and responsibility of providing an enriching, nurturing experience for all children in the program. All parents are asked to volunteer throughout the year. Examples of volunteers tasks may include:
assisting in the classroom with special theme related activities
organizing and help with yearly fundraisers
field trip chaperoning
washing of classroom toys/supplies
Does attendance at Kinderstube allow my child preferred enrollment at the Twin Cities German Immersion School? No. The Twin Cities German Immersion School is a public charter school and part of the St. Paul public school system. While children who attend Kinderstube are well-prepared for success at TCGIS, they are not given enrollment preference. Kinderstube families must follow the same TCGIS enrollment procedures as the general public.
How do I schedule a visit to Kinderstube? All families are highly encouraged to visit Kinderstube before enrolling. To schedule a visit, e-mail Kinderstube Director Babett Larimer or call 651-353-5147.
Does Kinderstube provide lunch and snacks? Children bring their own lunch from home. As Kinderstube does not have access to a commercially licensed kitchen, we are prohibited from preparing lunches for the children. Families are asked to supply healthy snacks in bulk on a rotating basis (twice a year). Please note that Kinderstube St Paul is a PEANUT-FREE ENVIRONMENT and Kinderstube Minneapolis is a completely NUT-FREE environment.
How can I continue my child's language education after Kinderstube? No matter if you choose public Kindergarten or an Immersion School, we can guide you to many other options that can help you continue to immerse your child in the German language.
